What is Quaker Works?
Quaker Works is a semiannual feature (published twice a year) in the April and October issues of Friends Journal. The function of the Quaker Works column is to connect our readers to the good works being done by Quaker organizations. View the most recent installment on our website.
Deadlines to be included in upcoming Quaker Works columns:
- April 2024 issue: Monday, February 12, 2024
- October 2024 issue: Monday, August 19, 2024
- April 2025 issue: Monday, February 10, 2025
- October 2025 issue: Monday, August 11, 2025
Submitting for both the April and October installments is optional. Organizations may submit for just one if they'd like to keep it a yearly update.
Word count limit: 225 words.
Each entry will begin with the full name of the organization and its main website (neither count toward the 225 word count).
What am I supposed to write?
Tell us what you've been up to! We look to staff members of these organizations to submit content to this column. Focus on what's exciting and important for our readers to know about. Highlights from your organization might include the start of a new program, details from a successful event, an overview of a recent gathering, the announcement of an award received, or other various accomplishments. Content submitted should strictly be about past and current work and should not promote, advertise, or fundraise for future work (this includes mentions of annual fund appeals, internships, fellowships, application deadlines, and upcoming service trips or projects). We want readers of this column to feel informed and excited, not pandered to or advertised to.
If you would like to advertise with us, please contact our advertising sales representative, Margaret Wood, at margaret@friendsjournal.org. You can also learn more about our advertising opportunities on our website.
Friends Journal retains full editorial control over the content published; this means editing for length, clarity, format, and style.
Which organizations are included?
We invite all explicitly Quaker-founded and/or Quaker-run groups and organizations to submit to this column (if you think we left someone out, please let us know). Most, but not all, are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.
The following groups are not eligible to be included in the column: individual Friends schools, colleges, and universities; Quaker retirement communities; monthly, quarterly, and yearly meetings; and media or publishing organizations (where that is the sole purpose). This is mostly because there are so many of these groups, which is awesome, but we don't have the staff and time resources at the moment to include all of them. There are still opportunities for these groups to appear in Friends Journal!

- News column: We cover noteworthy and timely Quaker news, publishing stories online first and then in print; see previously published News items here. Send us tips at news@friendsjournal.org.
- Departments: Shorter articles that are usually more narrow in scope than features and don't have to fit into an issue theme; there are a range of categories, including Earthcare, History, Reflection, Bible Study, and Witness.
